Nanih Waiya Cave, Louisville, Mississippi |
Nanih Waiya Cave is in a dark, secluded area off paved roads. We couldn't help but wonder if the cave's hill was also a mound. The cave itself is nestled into roots of several trees and looks like a burrow that leads both to the right and left. The giant hill is capped by oak trees with a bare summit that someone clears and sweeps up. A slow moving creek, filled with bald cypress trees, runs along the base of the hill. Paths lead into the thick woods, which are filled with noise and movement of birds, lizards, and other animals. The aromatic earth smells and bird calls bring the area to life. In the background was a low hum that turned out to be from a factory located near the mound. Despite the picnic tables scattered on one face of the hill, this site felt very intimate and ancient.

Choctaws made pilgrimages to the mound and left offerings on its surface for centuries. Tribal councils historically met on top of the mound (Carleton).

Traveling through the lands surrounding the Choctaw Reservation, Linda observed that the scenery looked like Norma Howard's paintings, even down to the cotton fields.

I used to hear my uncle speaking Choctaw, and I still remember about a hundred words. I lived on the res in Durant as a baby. I have no ndn number, I look White, but I still remember how to make pashofa, and remember the stories my grandma would tell.
I named my son Nashoba.
I want to visit here one day because growing up with Choctaw family made my life deeper and happier.
Will the gate every open back up I love vist it
Actually it is still open to anyone who will respect the sacred land as i live next to the site
Have there been been reports of strange spiritual activity at the site? My husband and I recently visited the site and felt a strong threatening spiritual presence that left us questioning much….
Ancient bones will do that to you. I've felt heavy spiritual presence on my ancestral lands of Kahikinui, Maui. It made me drop to my knees in prayer. Telling my ancestors who I am..nd that I come with God ❤️
This is actually 2 seperate mounds. Would love to help you write a new article about the site as we are making changes and improvements to the area. Also, the cave is off limits unless you have permission from the Tribal Wildlife and Parks department. It's easy to get. Just give them a call.
